  2. studentska radionica u suradnji s FGAG-om – ispitivanje potencijala lokacije,
  3. izložba u Domu kulture Zvonimir Solin i odabir najuspješnijeg idejnog projekta,
  4. konzultacije s ciljnim skupinama (vrtići i osnovne škole; stručnjaci i udruge iz područja ekologije, permakulture, obrazovanja i kulture; umjetnici) i i lokalnom zajednicom,
  5. medijska vidljivost projekta.

Najuspješnije idejno rješenje odabrat će žiri i zainteresirani građani, a ono će služiti kao podloga za izradu glavnog projekta koji će Grad Solin i Hrvatske šume – UŠP Split prijaviti na odgovarajući EU natječaj.

Space for the local community

In the City of Solin, near the Jadro river spring in the former cement worker’s settlement called Majdan, there is an unused ex marlstone quarry surface, size of nearly 5 hectares. Defined by the applicable General urbanistic plan as a protective green space, the surface is owned by Republic of Croatia and managed by the Croatian Forests – Forest Administration Split.

After years it has stayed unused, local government of the City and Croatian Forests reached an agreement about joint engagement on the revitalization of this space. The target site is specific because it reflects upon three themes important for the sustainable development and identity of the City of Solin:  ecology, archaeology and industry. Apart from being known after rich archaeological heritage, Solin is also a cradle of the cement industry in the middle Dalmatia. As the cement factories after all didn’t enrich urban and suburban landscape of the City as it was claimed by Marin Ferić, one of the largest stakeholders of the cement factory “Adriaportland”, the time has come to deal with industrial heritage and to develop models that are able to turn the present disadvantages into tomorrow’s advantages.

The space whose potential we are examining through the student workshop in architecture and planning, named Mayday! Majdan! Mayday!, is a peripheral part of the forest-economic entity “Mosor-Perun”. According to the criteria in forests functions stated in the management plan made by Croatian Forests, the area has positive effects on the water regime and hydroelectric system, on air conditioning of immediate settlements, and protecting and enhancing the environment. It has middle scores on dimension regarding recreation, tourism and health functions, but it is emphasized that there is great potential for realization of such contents. Recreational potential of the target area is a starting point for revitalization process, but it is upgraded with educational and cultural/artistic components that enable a wider range of activities and invite the local community to participate more actively in the creation of a content and usage of the surface.

In 2014 we submitted the project idea of designing an interactive, participatory park and garden on the plateau of the former marlstone quarry as a part of the “Idea Camp”, organized by the European Cultural Foundation on the theme of activating the community in (re)defining and (re)shaping public spaces. The project “Ex Marlstone Quarry as a Community Space” has been listed among the top 50 out of 813 applications from all over Europe, and at the end it was one of the 25 projects that have received ECF’s funding for research.

The research process consists of several components:

  1. Building the (institutional) collaborative platform,
  2. Student workshop in architecture and planning Mayday! Majdan! Mayday! in partnership with UniversityofSplit, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Geodesy – analysis of the site’s potentials,
  3. Exhibition in the Cultural Centre Zvonimir Solin and selection of the most successful student preliminary architectural design project,
  4. Consultation with target groups (kindergartens and elementary schools; experts and NGO’s in the field of ecology, permaculture, education and culture; artists) and the local community,
  5. Creation of visual identity and visibility of the project.

The most successful student preliminary architectural design project will be selected by jury and citizens who visit the exhibition. It will serve as a basis for the detailed architectural design that the City of Solin and Croatian Forests – Forest Administration Split are going to submit on the appropriate EU fund.
